Of course in the background you also have the lady talking about the survival of the fittest with the rat. The Girl wants to fly, so she loved the monsters (Redundant-I know =P). We all have demons/monsters, and once we get past them, accept them, over come them, we become better, and are better able to understand those around us, and what they are going through. But she still feels cast out, alone, in pain, and no one really knows what she is dealing with. She is young, in pain, maybe alone and with no one to help point her in the right direction, or give her something to feel/be a part of, or maybe even a goal to shoot for. Rather than getting hung up by the past, or weighed down by the monsters that consume her, she would rather love the monsters, or make peace with her inner demons, so she can fly, she can get away, she can be better for it. Perhaps the life she has led so far has given her an abstract or outsider type of view point. The Girl who loved the monsters-sees or saw the world differently, maybe not from an optimistic, or pessimistic stand point, but just differently than most. Or creating herself in a way, again letting go and trying to move on or build herself into something better. Maybe even that she is establishing who she is, by putting herself down on the canvas. This could symbolize that she is letting go of the pain within her (self-harm-or maybe figuratively she feels as though she is bleeding out).
